The Lagos State Police Command says it is investigating claims that operatives from the Tactical Squad of Onikan Police Station tried to extort N3 million from a man at gunpoint during a late-night stop in Lagos.

The complainant, identified on X as Boluwatife, said the incident happened around 1 a.m. on Thursday while he and a friend were driving from Lekki to Victoria Island for a music event.

In his account, Boluwatife said about five armed officers stopped him near the Lekki–Ikoyi Link Bridge roundabout. He alleged the officers cocked their rifles, dragged him out of the driver’s seat, and accused him of killing policemen in Lekki.

He claimed they handcuffed him and his friend, put them in a police Hilux, and took them to Onikan Police Station while other officers drove his car away.

“At the station, they told me to remove my shirt, shoes, and socks like they were about to detain me,” he wrote. “They searched my car and papers but found nothing.”

Boluwatife said the officers later demanded N3 million and threatened to frame him as a fraudster and cultist if he refused.

“Two hours later, they reduced it to N500,000,” he wrote. “They gave me back my phone, and I quickly called my people. That was how I got rescued. I’m not shaken, but what about the common man who has nobody? Ten police officers threatening you for no reason is just wild.”

Lagos State Police spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, said the Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, had summoned the officers to the Command Headquarters and ordered the State Criminal Investigation Department to investigate.

“The public will be updated on the outcome,” Hundeyin wrote on X.
