Policeman shoots, kills driver over N100 bribe in Anambra

A police officer in Anambra State allegedly shot and killed a commercial bus driver over a N100 bribe at a checkpoint in the Otuocha Area Command, Anambra East Local Government Area.

The tragic incident happened on Saturday, November 2, 2024, sparking panic and anger among locals.

Eyewitness Kamtochukwu, another commercial driver who was near the scene, shared details of the incident, to the PUNCH saying, “The young man was shot during an argument with the police officers over a N100 bribe. During the heated exchange, one of the officers quickly pulled his gun and shot him.”

He added, “The driver’s vehicle was just ahead of mine in the line, and we suddenly heard a gunshot. It caused chaos, and some local youths gathered, angry at what had happened before the police eventually left the scene.”

Following public outrage and inquiries, Anambra State Police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed that the officer involved has been identified as Inspector Sani Suleiman. “Inspector Suleiman has been disarmed and detained for further investigations and internal disciplinary action,” Ikenga stated, adding that the police are “fully aware of the incident” and have the situation under control.
