Imo Police Station Attack: Missing policeman reappears
A police inspector, who was allegedly abducted by the gunmen that attacked Mbieri police station in Mbaitoli council area of Imo State on Wednesday night, has reappeared.
Spokesman of Imo Police Command, Orlando Ikeokwu, who disclosed the policeman’s reappearance on Thursday, said the command was made to believe that the inspector had been missing. Two other policemen sustained injuries during the attack.
Ikeokwu, however, said the officer jumped over the fence and escaped through the back.
According to him, after the attack on the police station, a headcount was carried out amongst the officers in the police division but the inspector could not be found
“His phone lines were switched off and that gave us a reason to believe that he was missing. But thank God he has reappeared this morning,” Ikeokwu said.
WuzupNigeria had earlier reported that the recent attack comes hours after gunmen attacked and freed over 1,884 at the Owerri Correctional Center on Monday.
In the latest attack, the gunmen also freed a number of suspects. A source had also said that policemen at the station repelled the attack.
The police source said “We resisted them but they overpowered us. They had more sophisticated weapons. They took all the phones they saw, released the suspects when they gained access and vandalised the police building.”
Between the months of February and April, six Divisional Police Headquarters had been attacked before Monday’s attack.
Other Police divisions attacked in the state within two months are Obowo, Aboh Mbaise, Ihitte/ Uboma, Isiala Mbano and the Ehime Mbano Divisional Police Headquarters.
