A police sergeant identified as Kennedy took his own life on Tuesday after shooting his girlfriend.
The incident occurred in Potiskum town, Potiskum local government area of Yobe State.
The girlfriend, who was seriously wounded, is in receiving treatment at a hospital.
The incident happened around 11:45am inside the sergeant’s apartment located at old secretariat building, adjacent Potiskum police station, Daily Trust reported.
The Yobe State Police Commissioner, Abdumaliki Sunmonu, said the sergeant was in his room with his girlfriend when the gunshots were heard.
“Later on, it was discovered that the sergeant shot his girlfriend, and shot himself. They were taken to hospital where the sergeant was confirmed dead, while the girlfriend is in critical condition,” he said.
He said that the sergeant was alone with the girlfriend in the room when the incident happened so only preliminary investigation will reveal what actually transpired.
A neighbour of the sergeant told our correspondent that the deceased often quarrelled with the girlfriend.
“They were having some issues these days, blaming the lady of cheating on him, but nobody suspected he will do something like that,” he said.
He said the sergeant befriended the lady for almost two years.
