The Police Special Fraud Unit has issued a stern warning to Nigerians seeking travel visas to adhere strictly to due process and remain vigilant against sophisticated scams.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday, the PSFU spokesperson, DSP Ovie Ewhubare, cautioned the public about fraudsters posing as embassy officials or agents.

“Genuine visa applications are processed only through recognised Embassies, High Commissions, or their authorised platforms,” Ewhubare stated.

He outlined red flags, including agents who guarantee visa approval, promise unusually fast processing, or demand payment through personal bank accounts, gift cards, or other unofficial channels.

“The public should be cautious of unsolicited messages, emails, or social media contacts offering visa assistance, particularly where there is pressure to act quickly or provide personal details,” he added.

The warning follows recent police action in Lagos, where a syndicate was arrested for allegedly defrauding over 100 victims of more than N500 million. The suspects operated an educational consultancy that falsely promised Canadian and Australian work visas.

DSP Ewhubare advised intending travellers to verify all information directly from official embassy websites and report any suspicious activity to authorities immediately.

“Following due process remains the most effective way to avoid becoming a victim of fraud,” he concluded.
