Police operatives in Enugu State have uncovered and dismantled a local firearms workshop hidden in the Amofia-Agu Affa community of Udi Local Government Area.

The operation was carried out by the Command’s Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad after the arrest of 32-year-old Ekene Okafor, a member of the Supreme Vikings Confraternity, who was earlier picked up for conspiracy, armed robbery, and illegal possession of firearms.

The state police spokesman, Daniel Ndukwe, said Okafor confessed during interrogation and led the officers to the secret workshop where his locally made cut-to-size gun was being repaired. The workshop owner, however, escaped on sighting the police.

Recovered items included locally made cut-to-size single-barrel guns, two English-made double-barrel guns, eight single-barrel guns, two live and eight expended cartridges, three generators, and various tools used for fixing firearms.

Ndukwe said the raid was conducted on June 30 around 4pm, following credible intelligence. He confirmed that efforts are ongoing to arrest the fleeing owner of the workshop.

The Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Mamman Giwa, praised the operatives for the successful operation and restated the command’s dedication to fighting the spread of illegal firearms and other crimes in the state.

“The command wants members of the public to remain vigilant, law-abiding and to continue providing credible information to the police,” Ndukwe added.
