The police have temporarily shut a hotel in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, following the death of a young man identified simply as Charles. This occurred under circumstances that have triggered questions from his family about the Rivers hotel death.
According to The Punch, the incident occurred at a hotel in Eagle Island Estate. Relatives and friends of the deceased gathered there after being informed of his death, which many are now referring to as the Rivers hotel death.
Family questions balcony fall account
The family said it was initially told that Charles fell from the balcony of a two-storey building at the rear of the hotel, a detail central to ongoing discussions on the Rivers hotel death.
His elder brother, Obomate, however, said relatives were not satisfied with that explanation. Therefore, they demanded to see the hotel’s CCTV footage.
He claimed the family did not observe signs they expected to find at the location. This would have been the case if Charles had fallen from the balcony.
Obomate further alleged that a doctor who examined his brother raised concerns about some of the injuries on his body.
Those claims have not yet been independently established by police. Nonetheless, the Rivers hotel death remains under investigation.
Police secure hotel
Officers from the Azikiwe Police Division were reportedly deployed to the hotel after the situation became tense.
Police subsequently ordered guests and other occupants to leave the premises and temporarily shut the facility.
The action is believed to have been taken to protect the scene. It also aims to prevent possible interference with evidence while investigations continue.
Charles’ remains have been deposited at a mortuary.
The family has called for a thorough investigation to establish exactly what happened before his death.
