The Delta State Police Command has intercepted 400 rounds of live ammunition at the Head Bridge in Asaba and arrested a suspect linked to the illegal transport.

Police spokesperson, Bright Edafe, said in a statement on Saturday that the operation was part of the command’s sustained crackdown on criminal activities under the leadership of Commissioner of Police Olufemi Abaniwonda.

He explained that the interception happened during a routine stop-and-search exercise by operatives of the ‘C’ Division, led by CSP Ogbe Emmanuel.

“While conducting surveillance at the Head Bridge, Asaba, the team flagged down a Toyota Hiace Hummer Bus with registration number NGK 16 XB, driven by one Ozoemenam Sylvanus,” Edafe said. “The driver’s uneasy behavior prompted a search, which led to the discovery of 400 live cartridges hidden inside the vehicle.”

He added that the suspect initially claimed the parcel contained padlocks but was left speechless after officers uncovered the ammunition. The suspect and the exhibits are now in custody, and investigations are ongoing to trace the source of the ammunition and the network behind it.

In another operation, the command arrested a suspected drug baron, 37-year-old Onos Afokoghene, notorious for distributing hard drugs across Warri and nearby areas.

According to Edafe, officers from the Orerokpe Division, acting on intelligence, raided a known hotspot in Jeddo Community. The suspect attempted to flee but was captured after a short chase.

Items recovered at the scene included 3kg of Canadian Loud, 10kg of Indian hemp, 24 litres of soaked weed, multiple sachets of Tramadol, and two POS machines suspected to have been used for drug sales.

Edafe said the police remain committed to dismantling illegal arms and drug networks across the state.
