Two suspected one-chance operators narrowly escaped death on Friday after a mob descended on them at Chicken Junction, Wuse 2, Abuja.
The suspects, who allegedly attempted to rob a female passenger inside an unmarked taxi, were dragged out of the vehicle and beaten by passersby after the victim raised an alarm.
A witness explained that one of the men tried to seize the woman’s phone and forced her to reveal her bank account PIN shortly after she boarded the car. “Immediately she raised the alarm, some passersby flagged down the vehicle. As the suspects tried to escape, the mob apprehended them and started beating them with sticks, while others pelted them with stones,” the source recounted.
The situation could have turned deadly, but police operatives arrived at the scene in a Hilux van and stopped the mob action. The men were taken away alive.
Confirming the incident, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, said operatives responded quickly to a distress call in the early hours of Friday. “Two persons were found lying on the ground around Chicken Junction, Wuse 2. The operatives promptly rescued them alive and rushed them to the National Hospital for medical treatment,” she stated.
She added that the FCT Commissioner of Police, Ajao S. Adewale, has ordered the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Wuse Division to carry out a thorough investigation into the case.
