The Anambra State Police Command has successfully rescued two children, Sunday Aliya (14) and Ebenezer Emmanuel (12), who went missing nine months ago. The rescue operation, led by officers of the State Criminal Investigation Department Gender Section, followed an intensive, intelligence-driven investigation that spanned several states across Nigeria.
According to a statement issued by the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, the case was initially reported at the Fegge Police Station in Onitsha on January 18, 2025.
The children’s guardian had sent them to fetch water from a nearby borehole, but they never returned home.
Following preliminary investigations, the case was transferred to the SCID in Awka for further handling. Acting on credible intelligence, detectives traced and apprehended a suspect identified as Yusuf in Katsina State. During interrogation, he provided critical information that led the police to Umunede in Delta State, where one of the missing boys, Sunday Aliya, was found.
Further investigations extended to Benin City, Edo State, where the second child, Ebenezer Emmanuel, was successfully rescued.
Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, praised the operatives for their dedication and professionalism, emphasizing the Command’s commitment to pursuing every lead regardless of the time it takes.
“The Command remains resolute in following every lead in any case to ensure that justice is served,” he stated.
The Commissioner also acknowledged the contributions of community members who provided valuable information that aided the investigation. He called on the public to continue supporting the police by sharing timely and useful intelligence.
Meanwhile, the Command confirmed that the children’s parents, who live in Ilorin, Kwara State, have been contacted. Arrangements are currently underway for the formal reunification of the rescued children with their families.
