The police in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, on Monday evening, rescued a newborn baby from where it was dumped by the mother in an uncompleted building at the Goshen Avenue, Adebayo area of the city.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Ekiti Command, Mr Sunday Abutu, said the residents of the community alerted the police about the baby, following which the security agents rose to the occasion.

Abutu said:

“We got a call from that a newly born baby was abandoned in an uncompleted building in Adebayo. We have recovered the baby and we immediately moved it to Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Ado Ekiti. The baby is now undergoing some treatment and care.”

He said efforts were ongoing to track the mother of the baby.

A source in the area said residents were attracted to the uncompleted building by the cries of the baby.

She said:

“The baby, with the placenta still attached to its umbilical cord, was discovered in an uncompleted building around Goshen Avenue, in Adebayo area of the town at about 10 pm on Monday.

“The baby, which had no clothes on, was dumped on the bare floor of the building. Residents took it upon themselves to contact the Office of the Wife of the Ekiti State Governor, Erelu Bisi Fayemi and the police authorities in the state.

“The baby was subsequently rescued by the police and moved to the EKSUTH where is currently receiving treatment on the bill of the wife of the governor,” the source said.
