A 400-level student of the Federal University Birnin Kebbi, Augustine Madubiya, who was kidnapped from his off-campus hostel, has been rescued by the police, the Kebbi State Government has announced.
The student was found in the Dakingari forest, located in the Suru Local Government Area, after police officers tracked and trailed the kidnappers.
The Deputy Governor of Kebbi State, Senator Umar Tafida, visited the scene of the abduction on Thursday. He was joined by the Kebbi State Commissioner of Police, Sani Bello, and the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Zaiyan Muhammad.
Speaking during the visit, the Deputy Governor said,
“The state government is committed to protecting students in all our institutions. We are happy the student is safe. He has been taken to the hospital for a medical check.”
Commissioner of Police, Sani Bello, said the kidnappers abandoned the student after feeling pressure from the police.
“We did not pay any ransom,” he added.
The student’s abduction had raised concerns among other students, especially those living outside the school campus.
Reacting to this, Professor Zaiyan Muhammad called for help from individuals and organisations to solve the hostel shortage problem.
“The lack of hostels is pushing many students to live off-campus where they are more exposed to danger,” he explained.
The state government and the police also promised to increase security around the university and other areas where students live.
