The Kwara State Police Command has launched an investigation into the death of Chief Imam, Alhaji Abdullahi Audu of Sokunkpan village, Tsaragi in the Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State.
Audu was killed by a mob in the community after he was accused of being responsible for the death of a villager.
The incident happened on November 4, 2025, and four suspects have been arrested by the Kwara State Police Command in connection with the killing.
Police spokesperson, Ejire Adetoun Adeyemi, confirmed the development in a statement on Thursday, describing the act as “criminal and punishable under the law.”
According to the statement, “On November 4, 2025, at about 9:30 p.m., one Ibrahim Gana, aged 25, who had been ill and on admission at a hospital, sadly passed away.”
Following his death, his brothers, Mohammed Shaba and Mahmud Gana, accused the Chief Imam of being responsible for their brother’s death. They reportedly mobilised other villagers to attack the cleric at his residence, where he was beaten with weapons until he died.
The police said an investigation began immediately, leading to the arrest of four suspects, while efforts are ongoing to capture others involved.
“The command warns the public against taking the law into their own hands. Jungle justice is criminal and punishable under the law,” Adetoun stated.
She urged residents to report suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through official hotlines, assuring that the command remains committed to maintaining peace and order across Kwara State.
