Police in Edo State have increased security across Benin City and other local government areas following reports that members of the Black Axe cult group may carry out attacks during their so-called 7/7 celebration.
The Edo State Police Command said the move is to stop any violence or disorder during and around July 7. The command explained that its action is based on strong intelligence that cult groups were planning to cause chaos in parts of the state.
Spokesman for the command, SP Moses Yamu, said extra patrols and surveillance are already in place across key areas.
The Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, has also warned hotel owners, bar operators, and lounge managers not to allow their spaces to be used for cult meetings.
“Any individual or business that facilitates or accommodates such criminal gatherings will be held accountable and dealt with in accordance with the law,” the commissioner said.
He asked residents to stay alert and to report any strange movements or gatherings to the police. The public was also encouraged to use police emergency numbers to report violence or threats.
