The Delta State Police Command has detained officers who were caught on camera assaulting a young man near the Asaba Specialist Hospital on Sunday, July 27, 2025.
Police spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, said the Commissioner of Police, Olufemi Abaniwonda, has taken action after a video of the incident went viral online. In a post shared on X, Edafe said, “The CP has summoned the policemen involved in the barbaric act. He has ordered that their team leader be queried, while the other officers be detained pending the commencement of the orderly room trial.”
Eyewitnesses said the officers stopped the victim around Hospital Road in Asaba and wanted to search his bag. When the man told them not to put anything into his bag and asked to see their hands, the officers allegedly began to beat him.
Edafe confirmed in a statement that the team leader, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, has been officially queried. He added, “The Command is aware of a publication circulating on X and other social media channels regarding the unprofessional conduct of some policemen within the command.”
He also said, “The Commissioner of Police, Delta State, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, immediately ordered that the policemen be identified and brought before the command headquarters for immediate disciplinary action.”
The police boss condemned the officers’ behaviour, saying it goes against the values of the command. “He assures members of the public that the officers concerned will be decisively dealt with in accordance with the extant laws as stipulated in the Police Act and regulations.”
He called on officers to respect the rights of Nigerians and stick to the rules of professional policing. “He has therefore tasked officers and men to uphold the tenets of professional policing in the discharge of their duties with respect to fundamental human rights of all citizens.”
SP Edafe also invited anyone with information about the victim to reach out to him or the Public Relations Office directly.
