Some police officers in Ogun State have been arrested for allegedly demanding money from the family of a missing girl before taking action on the case.

This was disclosed by the Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Police Force, Muyiwa Adejobi, in a post on X.com on Saturday. Adejobi confirmed that the officers involved are currently in detention and undergoing disciplinary action.

His post read: “Otta missing girl: The policemen who demanded money before they could attend to the case have been arrested and are now in detention for disciplinary action. We condemn such an act and will not tolerate it. It is inhuman, apathetic, and unprofessional.”

Adejobi assured the public that the Ogun State Police Command is actively working to locate the missing girl.

“The girl will be found as soon as possible. We also urge the family of the victim to cooperate with the police,” he added.

Reports revealed that a seven-year-old girl, the daughter of a point-of-sale operator in Ogun State, was allegedly kidnapped by one of her mother’s regular customers. The man reportedly bought food for the girl and later sent her on an errand to buy water, during which she disappeared.

When the girl’s mother went to the police station to report the incident, the officers allegedly demanded ₦10,000 to file the case and another ₦30,000 to track the suspect’s phone number.

The incident has sparked outrage, with many Nigerians condemning the officers’ actions as unprofessional and insensitive.

The Ogun State Police Command has pledged to bring the officers involved to justice while intensifying efforts to locate the missing child.
