Police nabs Enugu resident for street pole theft

The Enugu State Police Command has arrested and charged a suspect, identified as Aliyu Saad, for allegedly stealing a streetlight pole in the New Artisan area of Enugu.

This was disclosed in a statement released on Tuesday by the Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police Daniel Ndukwe, on X.com.

According to the statement, Saad was apprehended in the early hours of August 8, 2024, by officers from the New Haven Division, acting on a tip-off regarding the theft.

Following his arrest, Saad was charged in the Enugu North Magistrates’ Court on August 13, 2024. He has been remanded in the Correctional Custodial Centre in Enugu, awaiting further court proceedings.

The statement read: “One Aliyu Saad, male, was arrested on 8 August 2024 at approximately 4:30 a.m. by operatives of the Enugu State Police Command serving in the New Haven Division. He was today, 13 August 2024, charged in the Enugu North Magistrates’ Court and remanded in the Correctional Custodial Centre, Enugu, pending further hearings.”

It continued, “The suspect was arrested for allegedly uprooting and stealing a streetlight pole at New Artisan, Enugu, following the operatives’ swift response to credible information about the criminal act.”

This arrest is part of a broader effort by the Enugu State Police Command, under the leadership of Commissioner of Police Kanayo Uzuegbu, to crack down on criminal activities, including the vandalism of public infrastructure.

Commissioner Uzuegbu commended the operatives for their quick response and urged them to continue their efforts in maintaining law and order. He also called on the citizens of Enugu State to remain vigilant, law-abiding, and to promptly report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
