The Delta State Police Command has arrested two suspected phone snatchers during a routine stop-and-search in the state.
Police spokesman, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the arrest in a statement on Monday, May 19, 2025. He said the suspects were caught while riding in a commercial tricycle, commonly known as keke.
During the stop-and-search, police officers found seven mobile phones hidden in the tricycle. The suspects could not unlock the devices or explain how they got them, which raised suspicion.
SP Edafe said, “Our men stopped a keke for a search and found seven phones with the rider. The passengers could not unlock the phones, so we had to investigate further.”
He shared a video of the arrest on X (formerly Twitter), warning Nigerians to be careful when using public transport.
“As you go about your activities this week, especially when boarding tricycles or buses, hold your phones in your hands,” he advised. “If a male passenger starts coughing, just mind your business and hold your phone tightly. Listen and learn.”
He also reminded the public that stop-and-search operations are important for catching criminals.
“Stop and search is part of crime fighting. When our men stop a vehicle, do not frustrate them,” Edafe added.
One of the suspects, Oliver Osadebe, admitted to the crime.
“I have been doing this before I went to South Africa in 2021,” he said during police questioning.
Explaining how he was caught, he said, “The police stopped the keke man and searched me. They didn’t find anything on me. Then they searched the keke man and found him with seven phones.”
The Delta State Police said the suspects will face charges after the investigation is complete. They also urged the public to report any suspicious activities or people to the nearest police station.
