The Rivers State Police Command has arrested a suspected car snatcher, identified as 42-year-old Iruo Young, after a viral video showed a man stealing a Toyota Avalon at gunpoint in Choba, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.
The command’s spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Thursday.
She said police operatives launched a manhunt immediately after the video surfaced online, showing the suspects intercepting and robbing a motorist.
“The incident occurred around 3 p.m. and involved the snatching of a Toyota Avalon at gunpoint. Through intelligence-led policing and technical support, operatives arrested one of the suspects, identified as Iruo Young, at his hideout in Ikoku, Port Harcourt,” Iringe-Koko said.
She added that during interrogation, the suspect confessed to the crime and gave details of his role in the operation.
According to her, efforts are ongoing to arrest other fleeing gang members and recover the stolen car and firearms used in the robbery.
The state Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, praised the operatives for their swift response and thanked residents who shared useful information.
He assured that the police would continue to clamp down on criminals, warning that there would be no hiding place for them anywhere in the state.
