Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command have taken into custody a 38-year-old man, Joseph Kehinde, alongside his 13-year-old son for allegedly possessing a firearm unlawfully along the Shagamu/Ogijo Road corridor.

The arrest occurred on Sunday, April 5, 2026, around 1100 hours during a routine stop-and-search exercise conducted by officers attached to the Command’s Quick Response Squad at the Lafarge area.

In a statement released on April 6, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babasiyi, explained that the teenager was first stopped while riding in a tricycle as part of standard security checks in the vicinity.

A subsequent search reportedly uncovered a locally fabricated pistol, a live cartridge, and a mask in his possession—items for which he failed to provide a satisfactory explanation at the time. Police authorities noted that the minor later alleged the weapon belonged to his father, a claim that prompted further action by the officers.

“Following the disclosure, operatives intensified efforts which led to the arrest of the father,” the statement said.

Both suspects have since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, where further inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the weapon’s possession.

The statement also indicated that the Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, praised the officers involved for their swift response, reaffirming the Command’s commitment to tackling illegal arms.

“We maintain zero tolerance for unlawful possession of firearms and other criminal activities. Residents are encouraged to provide timely and credible information to support security efforts,” he said.

Police authorities added that the suspects will be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
