Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have apprehended a notorious armed robbery suspect allegedly involved in a series of violent crimes, including a recent broad-daylight gold jewelry heist on Allen Avenue, Ikeja.

The arrest came after weeks of surveillance and tactical intelligence gathering by officers of the command.

According to authorities, 28-year-old John Samuel, a native of Akwa Ibom State and an ex-convict, was captured on September 19 at his hideout in Epe.

Samuel, who had recently completed a six-year prison term for armed robbery, reportedly resumed criminal activities shortly after his release.

Investigators described him as a repeat offender with a pattern of violent robberies, often shooting his victims before making away with their possessions.

Police reports indicate that on August 18, Samuel targeted a businessman identified as Gbenga Obama on Gbajobi Street, off Allen Avenue. Armed with an English pistol, the suspect allegedly shot the victim before seizing a valuable gold necklace and other items. He then fled the scene on a motorcycle operated by an accomplice.

CCTV footage from the incident confirmed the violent nature of the attack, which left Obama with severe gunshot injuries. The victim has since received medical treatment and has been discharged from the hospital.

During interrogation, Samuel reportedly confessed to selling the stolen gold jewelry for approximately ₦4 million, significantly below its market value. Police say efforts are ongoing to track down his accomplices and recover the remaining stolen items.

Commissioner of Police, Olohudare Jimoh, praised the officers involved for their professionalism and quick response. “This is a commendable effort by our operatives. Their swift and coordinated actions helped take a dangerous individual off the streets,” he stated.

In a statement issued by the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Babaseyi Oluseyi, the command reiterated its dedication to protecting lives and property in Lagos. He warned criminals against operating within the state, emphasizing that law enforcement remains vigilant and ready to respond.

The police also urged members of the public to remain alert and provide credible information that could assist in ongoing investigations.
