The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the killing of a wanted kidnapper and murder suspect, David Uzoma Kamalu, also known as M-Kaze, during a raid on his hideout in Rumuodogu 1 Community, Emohua Local Government Area.
The police spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, said in a statement on Thursday that Kamalu was behind several violent crimes, including armed robberies and kidnappings along the East-West Road.
He was also wanted for the gruesome murder and beheading of a local vigilante leader, Mr. Alete, popularly called “Hunter Commander,” in January.
According to Iringe-Koko, “In a daring operation on May 25, 2025, around 1am, officers from the Rumuji Division stormed a known criminal hideout in Rumuodogu 1. They came under heavy gunfire from the gang, but in the shootout that followed, M-Kaze was neutralised, while other gang members escaped with bullet wounds.”
She added that police recovered one pump-action gun, two live cartridges, and several charms believed to be used for protection and fear tactics.
Kamalu had been a major target for the police and local authorities. A bounty had earlier been placed on his head by the former chairman of Emohua Local Government due to the threat he posed to public safety.
The statement described him as “a high-value target with a notorious reputation for orchestrating heinous crimes against innocent citizens.”
Commissioner of Police in the state, Olugbenga Adepoju, praised the officers for the successful operation and promised that the police would continue to work hard to make the state safe.
He assured the public that the hunt for the fleeing members of the gang would continue until they are caught and brought to justice.
Iringe-Koko also urged residents to be alert and report anyone with suspicious gunshot wounds to the nearest police station.
“All recovered items have been carefully documented for investigation and future prosecution,” she said.
The police say their goal is to dismantle criminal gangs and restore peace to communities across the state.
