Two armed hoodlums were shot dead by security operatives after they attacked a police checkpoint in Isuofia, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The attack happened on Thursday evening, May 15, 2025. It was confirmed on Friday by the spokesperson of the Anambra State Police Command, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga.

According to a community leader, the hoodlums came in large numbers and hid in a bush close to the checkpoint before launching the attack.

“The police resisted the attack, and there was a serious gun battle. Gunshots were heard for several hours, and people around were very scared. One of the security vehicles was burnt, and some lives were lost,” the source said.

He added that the hoodlums fled the scene but left behind one of their vehicles.

Confirming the incident, DSP Ikenga said two of the armed men were killed while one security officer also lost his life during the shootout.

“One of the Anambra joint security teams resisted an attack by armed criminals at a security checkpoint in Isuofia, Aguata LGA. Two of the armed hoodlums were neutralised in the process,” Ikenga said.

“Sadly, one security operative was fatally wounded, and a security vehicle was burnt by the criminals.”

He added that the attackers ran away and left behind a Toyota Sienna vehicle, which they used during the operation.

Ikenga said the police and other security forces are searching the nearby bush to arrest the fleeing suspects.

He also said the Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, condemned the attack and promised that those responsible will be caught.

“The CP sees this as a test of the people’s commitment to working with security agencies to drive out criminals from the state,” Ikenga noted.

He assured residents that normalcy has been restored in the area and more security personnel have been deployed to maintain peace.
