The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has launched an investigation into the attack on Jude Ezenwafor, the Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate for the upcoming Anambra governorship election.

Ezenwafor was shot in both legs by gunmen on Friday night near Wuse 2, Abuja, while returning from an outing. Two other persons were also injured during the attack.

FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed the incident on Sunday and said investigations were ongoing.

“The police command is yet to conclude investigations as touching the true position and situation surrounding the incident,” she said.

Adeh urged anyone with information to help the police. “While investigation is currently at top gear, individuals or persons with relevant information are advised to come forward and report to the nearest police station. Your cooperation will greatly assist our investigation and help ensure justice is served,” she added.

Ezenwafor, who emerged unopposed as the PDP candidate for the November 2025 election, is currently receiving treatment in a private hospital. Doctors are reportedly preparing to remove bullets from his legs.

Shortly after the attack, videos of his injuries were shared in a PDP Anambra governorship campaign forum, where he thanked God for sparing his life.

An aide to the politician confirmed the attack but refused to give further details. “Yes, it happened. But it’s not something I want to talk about now, please,” the aide said.

The incident has sparked outrage from political associates and support groups. Chinedu Nsofor, a senatorial hopeful in the August 16 Anambra South bye-election, condemned the attack.

“I pray for divine intervention in our land. May the Almighty God protect every sincere leader and candidate from the snare of the wicked. May Nigeria rise again with a new order of safety, unity, and progress,” Nsofor said.
