Tragedy struck the Agyaragu community in Obi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State as five children were found dead inside an abandoned vehicle on Sunday, May 4, 2025.

The state Commissioner of Police, Shetima Jauro-Mohammed, has ordered a full investigation to find out what led to the deaths.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ramhan Nansel, the lifeless children were discovered inside an old, unserviceable vehicle parked at the home of one Mr Abu Agyeme.

He said, “On Sunday around 5:30pm, a resident named Mr Ozimna Ogbor reported to the police that five children were found unconscious in the abandoned car.”

Police officers rushed to the scene and found the children locked inside the vehicle. They were taken to Aro Hospital in Agyaragu, where a doctor confirmed that all five had died from suspected suffocation.

SP Nansel said the victims were between six and 10 years old.

“The Commissioner of Police is deeply saddened by the loss. He sends his condolences to the families and has called for a proper investigation,” he said.

He added that the children had suffered heat burns and their bodies were later handed over to their parents for burial.

The police also used the opportunity to warn parents, guardians, and vehicle owners to be more careful and to stop children from entering parked or abandoned cars without supervision.

“This heartbreaking event reminds us of a similar case that happened in August 2019,” Nansel added.
