Police in Kwara State have launched a manhunt for the person who killed a hotel receptionist in Ilorin identified simply as Yemi.
The incident happened in the early hours of Sunday when an attacker allegedly gained entry into the hotel and strangled her while she was on duty.
Confirming the case on Wednesday, the spokesperson for the Kwara State Police Command, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, said the hotel manager reported the matter on Sunday, November 16.
In a statement, the command said detectives from the A Division moved to the scene after receiving a distress call. The statement read, “The victim was found with a white cloth suspected to have been used to strangulate her.”
The hotel manager, Mr Akin, said he was asleep when he saw several missed calls from the hotel’s official line. He said an unknown man picked up when he called back and warned him never to call the number again.
He said, “When I called back, a man picked up and told me never to call the number again. I immediately rushed to the hotel. On getting there, I found Yemi lying lifeless on the floor, and I quickly alerted the police.”
The Commissioner of Police, CP Adekimi Ojo, has ordered a full investigation and directed operatives to track down those responsible. The command said, “Efforts have been intensified to identify and arrest those behind this heinous crime. No stone will be left unturned in ensuring justice is served. Further updates will be communicated as the investigation progresses.”
The killing has raised fresh concerns about night-time security in hotels and other hospitality businesses in Ilorin, with some residents urging stronger surveillance and checks.
In a separate incident, the Kwara State Police Command said suspected bandits killed two people and injured one during attacks in Eruku, a boundary town in the Ekiti Local Government Area. A parish of the Christ Apostolic Church was among the places attacked. Police said a worshipper was killed there, while another victim’s body was later found in the bush.
