Police in Katsina State say they have rescued at least 50 people who were kidnapped and recovered 229 rustled animals in different parts of the state in July.

The spokesperson for the command, DSP Abubakar Aliyu, told reporters on Friday that the rescue operations were part of several successes recorded within the month. He said the animals recovered included 161 cows and 68 sheep.

Aliyu also said the police foiled multiple bandit attacks across communities and arrested 302 suspects for various crimes. According to him, the suspects included 14 for armed robbery, 22 for murder or culpable homicide, and 25 for rape. Others were 20 suspected vandals, eight suspected fraudsters, and 26 people held for drug-related offences.

He explained that the police also seized three suspected stolen vehicles, two motorcycles, a quantity of illicit drugs, dried leaves believed to be cannabis, and a large quantity of vandalised armoured cables.

On behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Bello Shehu, Aliyu thanked residents for their support in the fight against crime. He urged more cooperation from the public.

“We urge the public to continue reporting suspicious activities and crimes to the nearest police station or use our emergency numbers: 0815697777722, 0902220969033 and 07072722539,” he said.
