Police operatives in Ogun State have stopped an armed robbery on the Sagamu–Benin Expressway, rescuing passengers from an ambushed bus and killing one suspect during a gun battle.
The attack happened at Imere Junction when a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number ENU 371 XJ, driven by Mba Kingsley Chukwuemeka, was blocked by a gang of about ten armed robbers.
Police spokesman for the command said a patrol team led by ASP Ayodele Ajao moved in quickly after receiving a distress call and engaged the robbers in a shootout.
“One of the suspects was neutralised while others escaped with gunshot wounds,” the spokesman said. “All passengers, including the driver, were rescued and taken to safety.”
The body of the deceased suspect has been deposited at the Ijebu-Ode General Hospital morgue for autopsy, while efforts are ongoing to track down the fleeing gang members.
In a separate incident, police officers on routine stop-and-search duty in Itele recovered an abandoned tricycle suspected to have been stolen. The tricycle, with registration number APP 171 OM and chassis number MB6M14PA0N4L10498, was abandoned by its rider, who fled upon sighting the operatives. It is now in police custody as investigations continue to trace the owner.
Meanwhile, two suspects, Adebayo Adeleke and Ibrahim Taiwo, were arrested in Idiroko for allegedly stealing a police exhibit.
According to the police, the duo was caught removing a revolving light from a Hilux vehicle parked at the station. They were handed over by a man identified as Oyeyemi Omotayo.
“The suspects have confessed to the crime during interrogation, and the exhibit has been recovered,” the spokesman added. “The case is under investigation.”
