The Enugu State Police Command has foiled an armed robbery attempt in the state and arrested a suspect in the process.

The incident occurred near Agric Bank Bus Stop, Independence Layout, Enugu metropolis.

The command’s spokesman, SP Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday.

Ndukwe said operatives responded swiftly to a distress call late on Saturday and apprehended a 28-year-old man while he was allegedly robbing members of the public.

“The suspect, Chimuanya Oshim, 28, was arrested on December 13, around 11:30 p.m., while attempting to rob members of the public,” he said.

He explained that the suspect was caught in the act after operatives attached to the Independence Layout Police Division arrived at the scene.

“At the scene, operatives caught the suspect robbing a young man and recovered a revolver imitation pistol loaded with eight toy bullets,” Ndukwe added.

According to him, the suspect is currently in police custody and will be charged to court after investigations are concluded.

“The suspect remains in custody and will be arraigned after investigations are concluded,” he said.

Ndukwe also said the Commissioner of Police, Mamman Giwa, had commended the officers involved and urged them to sustain the tempo in the fight against crime.

“The commissioner urged residents to support policing with timely, credible information to aid crime prevention and detection,” he added.

The police spokesman further recalled that the command had earlier arrested six suspected cult members in the state.

According to him, the suspects were apprehended by the Anti-Cultism Unit while allegedly attempting to force people to be initiated into the Supreme Vikings Confraternity.

He said items recovered from them included a gun, cutlasses and alcoholic drinks.
