Operatives of the Rivers State Police Command have achieved a significant success in the battle against kidnapping, arresting a suspected gang member and seizing two AK-47 rifles, magazines, and ammunition after preventing an abduction in Port Harcourt.
The development was confirmed in a statement released by the police on Tuesday.
The operation was initiated following a distress call received in the early hours of March 20 from 35-year-old resident Fadi Nasser, who reported that armed men had stormed his home along Orogbum Crescent, Woji Road, in the Government Reserved Area (GRA) of the state capital.
Police sources said the attackers attempted to abduct Nasser and opened fire during the encounter. Despite the violence, the victim managed to escape, a turn of events officials described as both fortunate and pivotal in prompting an immediate police response.
Investigators made a breakthrough after recovering a mobile phone believed to belong to one of the suspects at the scene.
Acting on this lead, operatives of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit, based in Aluu, used technical intelligence to track the device, resulting in the arrest of Joseph Abibo, identified as a member of the gang.
During interrogation, Abibo reportedly provided actionable intelligence that guided police to the gang’s hideout. Upon reaching the location, however, operatives came under heavy gunfire from other gang members.
A gun battle ensued, and police forces successfully overpowered the suspects. Several gang members fled, with sources confirming that approximately six suspects escaped into a nearby river, some wounded by gunfire.
A comprehensive search of the hideout yielded two AK-47 rifles, four magazines, and 108 rounds of live ammunition, believed to have been used in the gang’s criminal activities.
Security officials emphasized that the operation is part of ongoing efforts to dismantle kidnapping networks and curb violent crime in Rivers State. They added that a coordinated manhunt is underway to apprehend the fleeing suspects and recover additional weapons.
Residents in the area have been urged to stay alert and assist security agencies by providing credible, timely information.
The Rivers State Police Command reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property, assuring the public that updates on the case will be provided as investigations continue.
