Governor Kefas Agbu of Taraba State has revealed that his sister, Atsi Kefas, was not killed by bandits as initially reported but was fatally shot by a police escort.
The revelation came during a press briefing held in Jalingo, where the governor disclosed new investigative findings surrounding the tragic 2024 incident.
“Life is very precious to me. You can’t just end someone’s life and think God will be happy with you,” Governor Kefas stated emotionally.
“My younger sister was shot and killed by a police escort who was inside the same bus with her.”
The incident occurred as Atsi was traveling alongside their mother from Jalingo to Abuja.
Initial reports had attributed her death to a suspected bandit attack along the Wukari-Chinkai Road.
However, subsequent investigations pointed to a police officer who discharged his weapon at close range.
“Investigation revealed that my sister Atsi was shot at close range. The policeman is still under investigation so that justice should prevail,” the governor confirmed.
He further explained that a medical examination during surgery uncovered firearm pellets in her body, which ultimately led to her death.
Governor Kefas also addressed a separate crisis during the press conference—the violent conflict in Karim-Lamido Local Government Area, which recently claimed over 50 lives. He led a minute of silence in honor of both his sister and the victims of the massacre, condemning the rising insecurity in the region.
To address the situation, the governor announced plans to establish a commission of inquiry into the Karim-Lamido violence. He emphasized the need for long-term peace strategies and urged residents to reject violence and foster unity for the state’s development.
As of the time of the briefing, the Taraba State Police Command had not issued a formal response to the governor’s claims. The investigation into Atsi Kefas’s death remains ongoing as the governor continues to pursue justice for his sister.
