The Nigeria Police Force has withdrawn the defamation case against Lagos-based lawyer and author, Dele Farotimi.

The police filed a notice to discontinue the case at the Federal High Court in Ado-Ekiti on Wednesday. The decision followed the request of the complainant, Are Afe Babalola, after the intervention of respected Nigerians.

The police prosecutor, Samson Osobu, confirmed the move. “The charge is being withdrawn following the desire of the complainant to discontinue the case,” he said.

Farotimi’s legal team has received the notice in court, but the judge is yet to formally strike out the case.

Meanwhile, another defamation case against Farotimi is still pending at the Magistrate Court in Ado-Ekiti.

The hearing is set for February 13, but there are expectations that the police will also drop that case before the next court date.
