Police officers dispersed protesting members of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, Osun State branch, as Chief Judge Adepele Ojo returned to her office on Wednesday.
The protesters had been disrupting activities at the State High Court since Monday, citing allegations of abuse of office and high-handedness against Chief Judge Ojo.
Upon Ojo’s return to the premises, protesters, who had left the gate open, moved towards her vehicle. In response, police operatives fired teargas to disperse the crowd, leading protesters to run in different directions.
Chairman of Osun JUSUN, Gbenga Eludire, addressed journalists after the incident, stating, “Following the action of the police and the attitude of the Chief Judge, I, Comrade Gbenga Eludire, hereby order that workers in the sector should withdraw their service until further notice.”
The strike declaration comes as a response to the perceived actions of the Chief Judge and the use of force by the police during the protest.
The situation has further heightened tensions between the judiciary workers and the judicial leadership in Osun State.
