Police dismiss three officers for killing KwaraPoly student

The Kwara State Police Command has dismissed three officers involved in the tragic death of a Kwara State Polytechnic student, Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola, at a police checkpoint on September 4, 2024.

The officers, identified as Inspectors Abiodun Kayode, James Emmanuel, and Sergeant Oni Phillip, were dismissed after an internal investigation and trial. Their dismissal is effective from October 4, 2024, pending their arraignment in court.

The incident occurred in the Zango area of Ilorin, where Qoyum, a recent graduate, was reportedly shot by the officers after refusing to give them money at the checkpoint. He was shot in the right hand and rushed to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, but later died due to severe blood loss.

The tragic death sparked protests by his fellow students and widespread condemnation from the public, with many demanding justice for the young man.

In a statement released by the police spokesperson, Ejire Adeyemi Adetoun, she explained the findings of the investigation: “The three officers were found guilty of leaving their post, engaging in corrupt practices, and unlawfully using their authority.”

The statement further read: “This decisive action highlights the unwavering commitment of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, to upholding justice, professionalism, and accountability across the Nigeria Police Force. Under his leadership, any breach of ethical standards, especially in cases leading to loss of life, will be met with a stiff response.”

The police urged the public to remain patient and trust in the legal process, as the officers will soon face trial.
