The Kwara State Police Command has denied reports of a terror group called ‘Mahmuda’ operating in parts of the state.

Social media posts had claimed that the group attacked villages such as Kemanji, Tenebo, Baabete, Nuku, and Nanu, all located in Baruten and Kaiama Local Government Areas. The reports also claimed that 15 vigilantes were killed during an attack on a security team in Kemanji and that the group was involved in killings, kidnappings, and ransom demands.

However, the police have described these claims as false and misleading.

In a statement released by the spokesperson of the command, Aderoun Ejire-Adeyemi, the police said, “Our comprehensive and continuous threat assessments, intelligence surveillance, and tactical reconnaissance operations in these areas have yielded no evidence of insurgent activity, coordinated terrorist formations, or mass casualty incidents as described.”

Ejire-Adeyemi further stated, “The claim of 15 vigilantes being killed is entirely false and devoid of any factual basis.”

The police assured the public that there is no threat to internal security in the affected areas.

“All security formations within Kwara State remain proactive and are strategically deployed under a multi-agency operational framework involving the Nigeria Police Force and other sister security agencies,” the statement added.

The command urged residents to remain calm and not to spread unverified information that could cause panic.
