The Osun State Police Command has asked the State Commander of the Amotekun Corps, Isaac Omoyele, to provide evidence of an alleged attempt on his life by unidentified gunmen.

The spokesperson of Osun Amotekun, Idowu Yusuf, had earlier said Omoyele was attacked by gunmen while driving home from work on Monday night.

Yusuf said the incident occurred around 10:05 pm along Ikirun Road in the Kobo area of Osogbo.

According to Omoyele, “I had left the office, driving home with my two-door vehicle. When I got to Kobo, some armed men suddenly appeared in a moving vehicle, double side by side with my car and started firing. Their faces were covered, and before I could react, they opened fire on my vehicle. Bullets riddled the car. I didn’t stop. I kept driving through the hail of gunfire. I was hit, but I managed to escape.”

He said the case was reported at the Ota-Efun Police Division in Osogbo.

When contacted, the spokesperson for the Osun Police Command, Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed that the incident was reported but said Omoyele must present proof before an investigation could begin.

“According to the report he made that he was attacked, the police have gone to the scene and we have told him to come along with the vehicle. He will have to produce the vehicle and other things to prove the incident before we can talk of an investigation,” Ojelabi said.

The reported attack came barely a week after some Amotekun operatives allegedly shot residents of Akinlalu community, killing three people during a raid.

The incident drew public criticism, with many calling for the arrest and prosecution of the operatives involved.

Police reports listed the deceased as Ibrahim Oyebamiji, 26, Sefiu Oyebamiji, and Abiola Olutayo. Those injured were identified as Adeagbo Kadijat, 22, Oke-Ila Oyebamiji, 60, and Fayomi Toheeb, 19.

The police also confirmed that Amotekun operatives took away the corpses after the incident.

The Amotekun leadership admitted that three people were killed but claimed the victims engaged its officers in a gunfight after ambushing them while they tried to recover two stolen rifles.

During a visit to the Alakinla of Akinlalu, Oba Oluwabusola Oloyede, the Deputy Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Oyewusi, assured residents that the government would ensure justice for the victims.

“We are here to commiserate with the families and the town over what happened. We also want to beg the youth of Akinlalu to allow peace to reign. The state government and the police have already started an investigation, and by God’s grace, the perpetrators will not go freely. We will ensure justice for the victims,” he said.

Oyewusi also promised government support for the affected families.
