The Enugu State Police Command has uncovered a suspected transnational human trafficking ring linked to prostitution, rescuing a 20-year-old woman and arresting a 50-year-old female suspect.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, said operatives from the Igbo-Eze South Division acted on credible intelligence on January 16, 2026.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim, a native of Abia State, was deceived into resigning from her job in Aba after being promised lucrative employment in Senegal. “The promised job later turned out to be prostitution-related,” the police stated.

The police further disclosed that on the same day around 7:10 p.m., the suspect, Ibekwe Nkiru, who operates from the Amorji-Nike area of Enugu, took the victim to a shrine in Alor-Agu Community, Igbo-Eze South LGA. The visit was allegedly on the instructions of other syndicate members still at large, for the victim to swear an oath of allegiance before being trafficked to Senegal.

“Upon receiving the information at about 8:00 p.m., the Divisional Police Officer promptly led a team of operatives to the location, where the suspect was arrested and the victim rescued,” the statement added.

The rescued woman has been debriefed and reunited with her family. Investigations are ongoing to dismantle the network and arrest other suspects.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has directed the State Criminal Investigation Department to take over the case. He reiterated the command’s commitment to combating human trafficking and appealed to the public for timely information to assist in crime prevention.
