The Nasarawa State Police Command has banned the burning of used tyres during crossover night activities ahead of the New Year celebrations in the state.

The Commissioner of Police, Shetima Mohammed, announced the ban in a statement issued on Tuesday in Lafia by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ramhan Nansel.

According to the statement, the police commissioner directed all Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers to enforce the ban strictly across the state.

Mohammed warned that anyone caught burning tyres would be arrested and prosecuted.

“Anyone found engaging in the act will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law,” the statement said.

The police commissioner explained that the ban was put in place to protect public and private property and to ensure safety during the festivities.

He said the measure was also aimed at preventing environmental pollution, avoiding damage to infrastructure, and ensuring the free flow of traffic.

The statement noted that the command was concerned about the risks associated with tyre burning, especially during large gatherings on New Year’s Eve.

Mohammed also issued a warning to vulcanisers operating in the state.

He urged them to properly dispose of used tyres or remove them from their workshops at the close of business each day.

“Vulcanisers must ensure that all used tyres are properly disposed of or taken away daily to prevent unauthorised access,” he said.

The police commissioner further called on parents and guardians to caution their children and wards against burning tyres or engaging in any unlawful acts during the celebrations.

He reassured residents of the state of the police command’s readiness to maintain law and order.

“The Nasarawa State Police Command remains committed to ensuring a peaceful, safe and hitch-free New Year celebration for all residents,” Mohammed said.
