The Ondo State Police Command has apprehended two individuals suspected to be members of an armed robbery gang during a routine stop-and-search exercise in the Oba-ile area of Akure North Local Government Area.

The suspects, identified as Simeon George and Moses Daniel, were arrested by police operatives working alongside a local vigilante group operating within the community.

In a statement issued on Friday, the command’s spokesperson, DSP Jimoh Abayomi, disclosed that officers recovered a “toy gun and a headlamp” hidden inside a bag belonging to the suspects during the operation.

He explained that initial investigations revealed that the suspects failed to give a convincing account of the items discovered in their possession, thereby heightening suspicion about their possible involvement in criminal activities.

“The suspects have since been taken into custody, while the recovered items have been secured as exhibits. The case has been transferred to the appropriate investigative unit for further examination to determine whether they are linked to any criminal activities,” Abayomi said.

He further noted that the suspects would be arraigned in court once investigations are completed.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Lawal, reiterated the command’s dedication to proactive policing strategies, including patrols, intelligence gathering, and stop-and-search operations aimed at safeguarding residents.

Lawal also praised the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, for his continued support and leadership, adding that it has significantly enhanced the morale and efficiency of officers across the state.

The police commissioner urged the public to remain cooperative by sharing timely and reliable information to support ongoing efforts to tackle crime.
