The Nigerian Police Force has arrested two suspected gunrunners in Edo State.

This was confirmed by the Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Tijani Momoh, in a statement made on Saturday.

According to DSP Momoh, the arrests were made following a directive from the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Edo and Delta zones, Arungwa Nwazue.

The AIG had instructed a crackdown on illegal arms as the Edo gubernatorial election approaches.

“In line with the directive, on Friday, at about 05:00 hrs, Zonal Intelligence Response Squad, led by ASP Mohammed Usman, acting on credible and actionable intelligence, stormed Ileh community in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of the state,” Momoh explained.

During the raid, the police successfully apprehended two suspects involved in illegal gunrunning.

“The operatives also recovered 30 locally fabricated guns, consisting of 23 single-barrel and seven double-barrel guns, as well as one English-made double-barrel gun,” Momoh added.

In addition to the firearms, the police seized 13 live cartridges, a giant toolbox, and a drill machine used to manufacture the illegal weapons.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects were involved in selling and renting out these firearms to criminals, including kidnappers, armed robbers, and cultists. These illegal weapons have been used to terrorize the people of Edo and surrounding areas.

“The AIG has ordered a comprehensive and thorough investigation into the case, after which the suspects will be arraigned in court for prosecution,” DSP Momoh stated.

He further urged all law-abiding citizens in Edo and Delta states to remain vigilant as they go about their daily activities. “Report all suspicious activities and persons to the nearest police station,” he advised.

The Nigerian Police Force continues to work to ensure the safety and security of the people, especially in the lead-up to the upcoming election.
