Operatives of the Ondo State Police Command have taken two men into custody after a police inspector was fatally stabbed during an altercation in Akure, the state capital.
The Police Public Relations Officer for the state command, Olusola Ayanlade, confirmed the development in a statement issued to journalists.
Ayanlade said the confrontation occurred on Wednesday morning when the officer, who was carrying out his lawful duties, encountered what he described as “recalcitrant individuals.” The officer sustained stab wounds during the clash and later died.
According to the police spokesperson, operatives were immediately deployed to the scene, leading to the arrest of two suspects. “Acting swiftly, the Commissioner of Police deployed a team of operatives to the scene, resulting in the arrest of two suspects directly connected to the incident,” he said.
Ayanlade identified the suspects as 25-year-old Shina Jacob and 32-year-old Felix Olalekan.
He added that the injured officer was rushed to the hospital but did not survive.
“The injured officer was also rescued and rushed to the hospital; however, despite all efforts, the police inspector sadly passed away while receiving treatment,” the statement read.
The command warned that attacks on police personnel will not be tolerated. “Furthermore, the Command reiterates that it will not tolerate any form of human rights abuse by its officers, just as it will deal decisively with anyone who assaults or attacks police officers in the course of their lawful duties,” Ayanlade stated.
He added that the suspects will be charged in court once investigations are completed.
