The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested three people suspected to be cultists and armed robbers who have been disturbing residents along the Calabar-Itu Road.
Police spokesperson, DSP Timfon John, said in a statement on Saturday that the suspects were arrested after the police got reliable information about a planned cult clash in the area.
“Following credible intelligence regarding an impending cult clash along the Calabar-Itu Road, the command swiftly deployed intelligence and surveillance teams to preempt any violence,” the statement read.
She explained that the police found out that two well-known cult leaders were hiding in a guest house at Ntak Inyang.
“On May 1, at about 5:00am, our surveillance teams moved into the area and raided the hideout,” she added.
During the raid, the police arrested two men: Joseph Edet from Akon Itam and Ekon Isaiah from Ibiaku Uruan. They are said to be members of the Kuklux Klan secret cult.
A woman, Esther Otobong Edem, who was with them at the time, was also arrested.
The police recovered several items during the operation. These included one locally made pistol, a battle axe, a hammer, and a bottle of liquid suspected to be a charm. They also found two torch lights, two mobile phones, and a black bag filled with different items.
DSP John said investigations are ongoing, and the suspects will be taken to court once the investigation is complete.
