The Ondo State Police Command has arrested three suspects linked to the attack on members of the National Association of Nigerian Students at Ogbese in Akure North Local Government Area.
The attack happened on Sunday, February 23, while the NANS members were traveling to Abuja for their annual convention.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Funmilayo Odunlami, confirmed the arrests in a statement on Tuesday in Akure.
Odunlami said the police received a distress call from one of the NANS members, reporting the unprovoked attack by some youths in the Ogbese area.
She explained that officers quickly moved to the scene to restore calm and ensure the victims’ safety.
“Intelligence gathered revealed that this was not the first time NANS members had been targeted in the same community,” Odunlami said.
She added that through intelligence-led policing, the police special squad arrested three suspects linked to the attack.
The Commissioner of Police, Wilfred Afolabi, assured NANS members that the case would be thoroughly investigated to uncover the full details and bring those involved to justice.
“The three suspects are currently undergoing interrogation and will be charged to court once the investigation is complete,” Odunlami stated.
She urged the public to remain law-abiding and report any suspicious activities to the nearest security agency.
The NANS team, led by Comrade Owolewa Taiwo, Zonal Coordinator, South-West, thanked the commissioner for the swift response and the command’s efforts to maintain peace.
Taiwo also promised NANS’ support in working with the police to fight crime in Ondo State.
