The Nigeria Police, The Bayelsa State Command has apprehended six individuals suspected of vandalizing and stealing solar-powered streetlights in various parts of the state.
The arrests followed a series of incidents that have targeted public infrastructure, particularly solar panels installed to enhance night-time visibility and security.
According to the police, the suspects were found in possession of stolen solar panels and iron-cutting tools used in the theft. Investigations are ongoing, with efforts focused on identifying individuals and networks involved in receiving or reselling the stolen equipment.
Commissioner of Police, Francis Idu, addressed the recent rise in vandalism cases, especially along the Elebele-AIT Road and other parts of Yenagoa. He confirmed that the suspects would face prosecution shortly. Idu also announced that the state government had bolstered police operations by providing a high-powered, long-range surveillance drone capable of both day and night monitoring.
“Vandalism is sabotage. We have discovered that some criminal elements are venting their frustrations on solar light infrastructure that has sustained nightlife in the state. Those involved are being monitored and apprehended,” Idu said.
He stressed the importance of protecting government investments, warning that public property should not be tampered with. “Public infrastructure should not be tampered with or destroyed. It is an investment for the people,” he added.
Commenting on the practice of parading suspects, the police commissioner advocated for a policy reassessment. “We do not support the dehumanization of suspects, but those arrested with evidence should be paraded as a deterrent to others contemplating such acts,” he stated.
