The Delta State Police Command has taken a community leader and five other individuals into custody over alleged sexual assaults said to have occurred during the Alue Do festival in Ozoro, located in Isoko North Local Government Area.
The action by the police follows the emergence and widespread circulation of disturbing video clips from the Uruamudhu Quarters of Ozoro Kingdom, which reportedly captured incidents involving the molestation of young women.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, CP Aina Adesola, strongly denounced the incident, characterising it as criminal, inhumane, and a gross violation of the victims’ rights and dignity.
Authorities confirmed that the alleged chief organiser of the event, Chief Omorede Sunday, along with four other suspects, has been arrested in connection with the case.
Police further revealed that the head of the Uruamudhu community was also apprehended over his alleged link to the incident.
The Commissioner has directed that the matter be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a detailed investigation, while also ordering the deployment of tactical teams to apprehend other suspects still at large.
