The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested seven suspected drug barons and several other suspects in a major operation carried out across various parts of the state.

The arrests, made between July 27 and August 1, followed intelligence-led raids by officers of the command.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Shi’isu Adam, confirmed the arrests in a statement released on Monday in Dutse.

According to him, large amounts of Indian hemp and other illegal drugs were recovered from the suspects, including five men caught with D5 and Exol tablets in Kiyawa.

The statement also revealed that in Dutse, seven more people were arrested with large bags of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.

“In the Ringim area, another suspected drug baron was found with sizable quantities of hemp and other substances. He will be handed over to the NDLEA,” Adam added.

In Hadejia, two other suspected drug dealers were also picked up with illegal substances. Police said they too would be transferred to the NDLEA for prosecution.

The state Commissioner of Police, Dahiru Muhammad, praised the officers for their efforts and promised that the command would continue cracking down on drug dealers and other criminals.

“We will continue to ensure a safer and more secure environment for all,” the CP said.

Apart from drug-related arrests, the police also nabbed a suspected cable vandal in Birnin Kudu. The suspect was caught with stolen government cables.

In Kazaure, three burglars were arrested after being found with stolen Android phones. All three suspects confessed and are expected to be charged in court soon.

In Gujungu village, the police stopped a motorcycle theft in progress and recovered the stolen bike. The suspect, Jibrin Muhammad, is currently under investigation, and police say his accomplices are still being tracked.

Two more suspects, Nazifi Ahmed and Salma Haruna, were also arrested for allegedly stealing a tricycle in Taura LGA. The tricycle was recovered and both suspects remain in custody.

Police urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the nearest station.

“The suspects are currently in custody and are assisting the police with further investigation,” the statement noted.
