The Anambra State Police Command has arrested nine suspects allegedly involved in the killing of Justice Azuka, the member representing Onitsha North 1 Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly.
Azuka was kidnapped on December 24, 2024, along Ugwunaobankpa Road in Inland Town, Onitsha, while returning home for the Christmas holiday. His decomposing body was found by the roadside near the Second Niger Bridge in the early hours of Thursday.
The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Nnaghe Itam, confirmed the arrests in a statement on Friday. He said the lawmaker’s body was discovered by a joint security team during a rescue mission.
“On the same day his body was found, our men, working with the Anambra State Vigilante operatives, arrested nine suspects believed to be involved in the incident. The operation was based on intelligence-led information,” Itam said.
According to the police, two pump-action guns were recovered from the suspects. Itam also revealed that one of the suspects sustained a leg injury during a gunfight with security operatives.
The arrested suspects are Ugochukwu Onuorah (30), Ikemefuna Ossai (20), Ikenna Orugu (27), Chibuike Obiefuna (19), Chinonso Olisa (19), Chinedu Okoli (21), David Ojini (25), and Peter Sunday (20), who has a large tattoo on his chest with the words “No peace 4 d Government.”
The police assured the public that investigations are ongoing to uncover more details surrounding the lawmaker’s death.
