The Nigeria Police Force in Yobe state has arrested Auwalu Haruna for allegedly abducting a 20-year-old woman and using charms to impregnate her.

The Command’s Spokesman, DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, revealed in a press statement that 34 cases of gender-based violence and related crimes were recorded in the last six months, with 85 percent of the cases undergoing trials and some resulting in convictions.

“Recently, the command arrested Mallam Auwalu Haruna, a self-proclaimed Marabou, for alleged abduction, use of charms, and impregnating a 20-year-old woman,” the statement read.

Abdulkarim explained the latest incident: “Tarmuwa Divisional Police Headquarters received a complaint from Alh Mohammed Kellu that his daughter was abducted by Mallam Auwalu Haruna on June 6, 2024. Following a thorough search, the victim was found in the suspect’s custody in Anguwan Arewa, Gaya LGA, Kano State.”

He added, “Medical examination revealed that the victim was two months pregnant. The victim confessed that she was coerced into drinking a medicinal concoction, which rendered her unconscious and vulnerable to the perpetrator’s actions.”

The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Garba Ahmed, urged parents, guardians, and community leaders to be vigilant about the relationships their wards have with others, as perpetrators are often close relatives, neighbors, or acquaintances.

He called on stakeholders to join forces in combating GBV, stating, “GBV has far-reaching consequences for the well-being and development of the girl child and society at large.”
