The Cross River State Police Command has arrested a 37-year-old security guard, Ndifreke Godwin, over the alleged sexual assault of an eight-year-old girl in Calabar Municipality.
According to Vanguard, Police Public Relations Officer ASP Eitokpah Sunday disclosed the arrest in a statement on Sunday, saying the incident was reported by the victim’s mother on August 29.
Police begin investigation
Preliminary findings alleged that the suspect lured the child to his residence along Tinapa Road with the promise of giving her money before allegedly assaulting her.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect allegedly lured the minor to his residence under the pretext of giving her money, where he allegedly sexually assaulted her,” the police statement said.
Following the complaint, officers arrested the suspect and began further investigation into the allegation.
The identity of the child has not been disclosed.
Case transferred to SCID
Eitokpah said the victim had been issued a medical form for examination and treatment.
He added that the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a more detailed investigation.
“The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for discreet and comprehensive investigation,” he said.
Police promise due process
The command assured the public that the suspect would be treated in accordance with the law while investigators establish the circumstances surrounding the allegation.
Police said appropriate legal action would be taken based on the outcome of the investigation.
The command also reiterated its commitment to investigating cases involving vulnerable persons and ensuring that complaints are handled through the appropriate legal process.
