Police arrest four suspected kidnappers, robbery gang members in Anambra

Security operatives in Anambra State have apprehended four individuals believed to be members of a kidnapping and armed robbery syndicate operating within the state.

According to a statement issued by the spokesperson of the state police command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the arrests were carried out by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad based in Awkuzu.

The suspects were picked up in the early hours of September 1, 2025, during a targeted operation in Amansea, Awka.

SP Ikenga revealed that the arrests followed credible intelligence linked to a kidnapping case, in which victims were reportedly freed after a ransom of ₦5,000,000 (Five Million Naira) was paid.

The case had earlier been transferred to the Rapid Response Squad from the B Division in Awka on August 14, 2025.

“The arrested suspects are: Chigozie Igboekwu ‘M’ aged 31 years, Odumegwu Chibuike ‘M’ aged 23 years, Jonah Awudu ‘M’ aged 40 years, and Okechukwu Nwari ‘M’ aged 33 years,” Ikenga stated.

He further disclosed that two pump action guns and nine live cartridges were recovered during the operation.

“The suspects have voluntarily confessed to the crime and narrated how they conspired among themselves, on 12th August, 2025 at about 7.00 pm and kidnapped two victims in Amansea, Awka, kept them for two days in a bush at Ugwuoba, Enugu State, collected ransom before they were released,” he added.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, commended the officers for their commitment and resilience. He reassured residents of Anambra of the Command’s continued determination to rid the state of criminal elements and ensure the safety of all communities.

SP Ikenga also noted that investigations are ongoing and efforts are in place to apprehend other members of the gang. The arrested suspects will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
